Young Minority is a cooperation forum for the youth organizations of Sweden's five national minorities.

The 2nd of December 1999, the Swedish parliament (i.e. Riksdagen), declared five national minorities:

Sweden-finns, Sámis, Tornedalians, Jews and Romas.

The sámis were also recognized as the indigenous

population of Sweden.

At the same time the parliament recognized 5 national minority languages: Finnish, Sámi, Meänkieli, Jiddisch and Romani chib.
On the 20th of May 2009, the language rights of the minority groups were being strengthened by a new language act.

The Invention of the Idea

Stockholm, 2012

Representatives of the youth organizations of the national minorities participated in a consultation with the Ministry of Employment in Stockholm the year of 2012. The idea of a cooperation forum for young persons in the national minorities was generated and the former integration minister Erik Ullenhag (The Libeal People's Party) was well disposed towards the idea.

The youth organizations came up with a project application for the Swedish Agency for Youth and Civil Society which later on culminated into the realization of the project.

About Ung Minoritet

The youth organizations of the five national minorities co-operate to strenghten the rights of children and youths in the national minorities! We're stronger together when we join together in mutual cases and discussions.

In the cooperation, engaged persons are being given a unique possibility to widen their knowledge about each other's minorities.

The presidency of Young Minority is being rotated among the youth organizations. The period of 2012/2013 Romas' Youth Organization had the presidency. The Sweden-finnish Youth Organization had the presidency in 2013/2014 and now in 2014/2015.

Young Minority is unique, there isn't any similar cooperation anywhere in the world between national minorities in any country.
